LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Broadcaster NBC has signed on for the first season of Songland, a new music competition reality show that focuses on songwriting over performance.

In each episode, five up-and-coming songwriters will perform original music in front of a panel of music producers and a major recording artist. The panel will choose three songwriters to advance, pairing them with a producer suited to their needs. Ultimately, a winner will be selected from the group and the chosen song will be recorded and released as the artist’s next single.

For the first season, NBC announced the participation of producers such as Ryan Tedder (One Republic, Taylor Swift, Adele, Beyonce), Ester Dean (Rihanna, Katy Perry, Nikki Minaj), and Shane McAnally (Keith Urban, Kelly Clarkson, Sam Hunt) will team up with songwriters to create the what they hope will be the next big hit single.

The first episode filmed features Charlie Puth as the recording artist.

According to NBC, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, TV producer Audrey Morrissey of “The Voice,” Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, have all signed on as producers for the series.

NBC has ordered 11 episodes for the first season of the series.

NBC is currently soliciting for candidates for the show and stipulates that applicants cannot have a current publishing deal.

NBC also stated that songwriters don’t automatically cede copyrights to songs they submit for consideration, but noted that when a candidate is selected to participate in the program, they will have to “enter into further agreements or sign other documents with Producer or other third parties regarding the rights to your song.”
