DOHA, Qatar (CelebrityAccess) — Construction has begun on the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, a unique stadium that will be used to host soccer matches during the World Cup when it lands in Doha in 2022.

The 40,000-capacity stadium will be composed largely of more than 900 shipping containers and other modular components, along with removable seats.

Following the games, the stadium will be completely dismantled to make way for a waterfront development but will be available to be used for other events.

As well, the stadium’s components will be sufficiently modular that they can be reassembled into smaller versions of the venue.

While the stadium does feature a steel framework to support the structure, its modular design means that fewer building materials will be required than in a traditional stadium, keeping construction costs down.

“Strictly speaking, we are not ‘constructing’ but rather ‘manufacturing’ this court. The sample box is about 6 meters long, both wide and high. It is about 2.5 meters. The finished product will be painted with different colors and patterns according to the design requirements,” Wang Fei, a project manager with CIMC’s Yangzhou factory told Hong Kong newspaper Ta Kung Pao.

The stadium, which is being built by Chinese container giant CIMC, is one of twelve stadiums in the works for the 2022 World Cup.
